Scholarships/Bursaries
Students are encouraged to research and apply for scholarships and bursaries to offset the cost of their post-secondary education. This can be a time-consuming process, but the monetary rewards can be great. There are many different types of scholarships. Some scholarships are given based on academic achievement, while others include criteria such as community involvement, volunteer work, and/or extra-curricular activities. Bursaries are awards given to students based on financial need, as well as other possible criteria. Scholarships/bursaries are available from organizations, employers, businesses, as well as universities and colleges themselves. Be prepared to fill out application forms, get reference letters, and/or write essays. Also, be aware of deadlines for application. Don't leave it until the last minute!

October 2020 Deadline:
Loran Awards – 30 X up to $100,000
Every year, the Loran Scholars Foundation invests in exceptional young Canadians who demonstrate character, service and leadership. We look for qualities that a transcript alone cannot show: personal integrity and character; commitment to service and an entrepreneurial spirit; breadth in academic and extra-curricular interests; strongly developed inner-directedness; and outstanding overall potential for leadership. Through the country’s most rigorous and personalized selection process, which includes interviews at the regional and national level, we select the top 30 of approximately 3,500 applicants as Loran Scholars.
Each Loran Scholar receives an award valued at up to $100,000 for their undergraduate studies. For four years, they receive the mentorship, financial independence and opportunities to seek out how they can most effectively contribute to society. Graduating scholars join a network of nearly 400 alumni who support each other as they take on leadership responsibilities beyond their years in business, public policy, medicine, law, academia, the arts and many other disciplines.
They are looking for students who demonstrate character, service and leadership potential. Excellent applicants show a genuine commitment to serving others, great potential as leaders, strong academic performance and moral character, independent thinking, and a willingness to take meaningful risks. We also look for entrepreneurship and broad academic and extracurricular interests. The 85% minimum average calculation includes the most recent three years of final grades on the student’s transcript.
Applicants may apply to one of two pools:
- the sponsored pool, for applicants sponsored by their schools
- or the direct pool, for applicants who are not sponsored by their schools.
Sponsored Applicants
Sponsored Applicants are those who are nominated by their school. Each high school in Canada is eligible and encouraged to sponsor up to three students for the award. CEGEPs may sponsor up to five students.
To apply as a sponsored applicant:
- Complete the online application form, including the email reference request.
- Seek nomination from your school through your principal or guidance counsellor.
- Send three copies of your application to the nearest regional administrator, as listed on loranscholar.ca/apply. Note that all extra materials, including certificates, resumes, and reference letters will be discarded. Double-sided copies are appreciated.

To be considered, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Students are eligible to receive the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award until they have received their first university degree (for a maximum of four years), provided they have maintained a standard of humanitarian work and personal conduct which, in the opinion of the Board of Directors, justifies the award.
